TCM Cooling Remedy for Fever and Reducing Heatiness

Whenever our children have high fever, their grandmother (奶奶) would remind us to prepare this Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) remedy - Ling Yang drink (羚羊水). It works well for our children.

Ling Yang (Chamois Horns 羚羊)

Ingredients:
Ling Yang (Chamois Horns 羚羊)
Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Japonicus 麥冬)
Deng Xin Cao (Jucus Effusus 燈心草)
Water

As for the amount of ingredients, I usually tell the staff at TCM shop that it is for children, and they will prepare accordingly.

奶奶's Method:
  • Round 1 - put all ingredients in a bowl (I use porcelain bowl, for double-boiling in Round 2), add boiling water just enough to cover the ingredients. Cover the bowl with a plate / lid for 30 minutes. Do not throw away the ingredients! Leave it in the bowl for Round 2.
  • Round 2 - Boil some water in a pot and place a steamer rack in the pot to prepare for double boiling. Add some hot water to the ingredients in the bowl in Round 1. Cover the bowl with a small metal plate, and place it in pot to double boil for 1 hour.

Remember to have a 1-2 hour interval between the fever medication (e.g. Paracetamol) and the Ling Yang drink.

Other than relieving high fever, this drink is also used to reduce "heatiness".

While this remedy works well for our children, it is advisable for you to consult your doctor / Chinese physician before you prepare this for yourself or your children.

  1. I would have made this for my husband some time back who ran a 102 fever for two days! But the only ingredient here that I'm familiar with is water, ha! Glad this works well for your kiddos - it's miserable when they're sick :(

    1. Hi Suriati, please consult a Traditional Chinese Medical practitioner or staff from Traditional Chinese Medical hall for advice, as the amount required for different age group is different.
