From Flying Cow Ranch (read our experience here), we took a taxi to Dahu Township (大湖) in Miaoli Country (苗栗). Other than farm stay, what else can we do at Miaoli?
Strawberry Picking in Dahu
The strawberry harvest season starts in late November, and ends in around April in the following year. My initial plan was to visit strawberry farm that is located near Strawberry Cultural Museum and winery, however, during our visit in early December this year, many strawberry farms were not ready yet. In the end, we decided to visit 六合草莓農場.
The farm uses an alternative way of planting strawberries - the strawberry plants are alleviated from the ground, so we didn't have to stand and squat to pick the strawberries. The height of the lower shelf is just nice for the children. In addition, the ground is laid with cover sheet, so that our shoes wouldn't get dirty.
It is said that this farm uses milk to irrigate the strawberries plants, so the strawberries taste quite sweet! The price was NT350 for 一斤 (about 600 grams), we paid NT170 for 20 strawberries of different sizes.
It was a blessing that we visited this farm, because the gentleman who served us that day was very helpful! When we reached there by taxi, Pei Pei was not feeling very well due to motion sickness. Later on, when I asked the gentleman where to take a bus (新竹巴士 Hsin Chu Bus 5656) to Miaoli train station, he offered to give us a ride as he was also going there! We were really thankful! If not for his offer, we would have to take the bus that travels around mountainous area that would make us uncomfortable!

High Speed Rail 台灣高鐵
By right, we could have taken a train from Miaoli Station back to Taipei. But we decided to take High Speed Rail which is a few kilometers away from the train station.
The train would take 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours to get from Miaoli to Taipei, depending on the train type, while the high speed rail took only 50 minutes! Ok, I should add the taxi ride which was about 10+ minutes, but it was still faster to take high speed rail! And more expensive of course! Anyway, it is the experience that counts!
To complete the high speed rail experience, I ordered a lunch box (NT500), which tastes delicious!
Other than these activities, there are many other interesting places to visit in Miaoli! Hope to go back some day to explore other areas!

Ooo.. I didn't know you could pluck strawberries in Taiwan in December! And such great hospitality, offering to send you all to the train station.
ReplyDeleteWe found out from some Taiwanese blogs that Dahu is popular in strawberry farms during winter!
DeleteOh wow, strawberries irrigated with milk! I never knew one can grow fruits that way. The "My Melody-shaped" strawberry looks very cute indeed!
ReplyDeleteWe will definitely check this farm out should we come visit Taiwan someday. Thanks for sharing the tour :)
I also didn't know that fruits can be irrigated with milk!
DeleteMmm yum yum I love strawberries. If we go I will be sure to add this to our itinerary! :) And oh, that obento looks good too!
ReplyDeleteAi @ Sakura Haruka
That obento is delicious!
DeleteSounds like a great place to visit and yeah, train lunch boxes in Taiwan is surprisingly yummy!
ReplyDeleteThis lunch box is much nicer than some lunch boxes that I have tried before!
DeleteMilk to irrigate the strawberries? What an experience.
ReplyDeleteMy kids will love the train (both museum and HSR)
cheers, Andy
(SengkangBabies)
There is another train museum in Zhang Hua, hope to visit there one day!
DeleteI didn't know about the Miaoli Railway Museum when we were in Taiwan. Must make a note about the strawberry farm for my next Taiwan trip too.
ReplyDeleteThe museum is not a popular tourist attraction, we didn't see anyone else when we were there.
DeleteTaiwan Taiwan. I must come visit you one day!
ReplyDeleteDo plan for it!
DeleteThe railway lunchbox looks so yummy. Hope to revisit Taiwan soon.
ReplyDeleteIt is really nice!
DeleteStrawberries irrigated using milk? No wonder they look so beautiful and grow so huge!
ReplyDeleteThey are sweet too!
DeleteSuch a beautiful experience to pluck strawberries and get closer to nature.
ReplyDeleteIt is a great experience for the children!
DeleteMiaoli is one of the best tourist destinations I have heard so far! I'm glad you finally had the chance to go and experience the strawberry picking. I would love to do the same with my kiddos.
ReplyDeleteIn fact, many parts of Taiwan are interesting!
DeleteHi, can i check with you which station should i stop if to travel from taipei to flying cow ranch by taking the high speed rail?
ReplyDeleteOr if by taking the railway train is a better option?
Much thanks.
The station should be Miaoli. But I am not sure how much is the taxi fare to the ranch.
DeleteHi, this may sound like a silly question but did you drag your luggages to the strawberry farm? This is my concern as I intend to visit the strawberry farm (if in season) after checking out from Flying Cow Ranch!
ReplyDeleteWe deposited our big luggage at our hotel at Taipei, and brought only two backpacks to Flying Cow Ranch and strawberry farm.
DeleteHi, Can you remember the taxi fare and if thete were many cabs that will go to dahu strawberry farm or and flying cow ranch?
ReplyDeleteThanks.
There are many taxis outside Tong Xiao train station where you can reach Flying Cow Ranch at around NT250. From Flying Cow Ranch to Dahu Strawberry Farm, the driver quoted us NT1000. You can ask the staff at Flying Cow Ranch to call taxi for you. When we took a taxi from train station to Flying Cow Ranch, we asked the driver for his name card and called him on the next day to send us from Flying Cow Ranch to Dahu.
DeleteThank You, sorry for the late reply. I missed the chance to go le. Xp.
DeleteBut will keep for future reference. ^~^
